What the check assesses
Whether one reward is clear enough to explain in a sentence, and whether its cost has been checked against your margin.
How easily a customer joins at the counter, and whether you invite people back only with recorded permission they can withdraw.
Whether your team shares one short routine, and whether you actually measure how many customers return.
In a car-wash experiment with 300 loyalty cards, 34% redeemed the reward with two starter stamps, versus 19% with a blank card. Both groups still needed eight paid visits. Test a clearly explained welcome bonus and measure completed cards, not just sign-ups.
Nunes & Drèze, 2006 — car-wash experiment429 effect sizes
A meta-analysis of 429 effect sizes found stronger effects on loyalty behaviour than on customer attitudes. Results varied by programme design and industry. Choose a reward that fits your business and measure return visits rather than assuming customers feel more loyal.
Belli et al., 2022 — loyalty programme effectiveness78 independent samples
A 2026 meta-analysis of 78 independent samples found positive associations between membership and customer outcomes, strongest at the purchase stage. Choose a specific goal and measure that outcome. Membership alone does not prove the programme caused the difference.

Your loyalty readiness
A score from your own answers to ten practices. It is not your retention rate, and not a revenue forecast.
Each of the ten practices scores 0, 1 or 2: not in place, partly, or in place. Twenty points in total, shown as a percentage. Actions start with your lowest-scoring areas. For equal scores, your obstacle takes priority, then your goal. Your chosen help sets the next-step link. Your note is shown back to you. Context never changes the score.
